Jason Charalambides,  PhD, PE, RA, ENV_SP

Dr. Charalambides earned his BA degree in Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley. He possesses a CEAA graduate degree in History and Theory of Architecture from the  École d'Architecture de Paris Villemin (France), an MA degree in Urban Rehabilitation and City Politics from the  École Supérieure De Commerce Marseille-Provence (France), and a Master of Architecture  and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. The subject of his doctorate dissertation was on the design automation for Tensegrity structures. 


He has been involved in University education since 1999, teaching at institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin and Frederick University in Cyprus.  Since 2004 he taught courses in Steel Design, Reinforced Concrete Design, Masonry, and Architectural Design Studio, and he conducted research and experiments on Concrete mixtures and additives.  His research interests are on design automation, numerical methods for the construction professionals, space structures, construction materials, and sustainable design, focusing specifically on passive energy control, and building materials.


He has also served on the Board of directors of the Structural Engineering Institute of Maryland to which he was the Vice President between Fall 2018 and Fall 2023.   He is also serving as  associate editor of the ASCE Journal of Architectural Engineering, is recipient of a number of awards including a Fulbright scholarship, and he participated in numerous projects as practicing architect in Europe and in the US. 


He is a registered architect, civil engineer, and sustainability professional ENV_SP in Europe and in a number of states in the US.  In 2013 he established Avant-Garde Engineering in Michigan and in 2014 the company moved to Maryland as a consulting firm where he engaged in architectural and structural design.  His most recent work is focused on residential and commercial rehabilitation, emphasizing sustainability and historic preservation.  On August 13 2021 Avant-Garde Engineering transferred to Florida.
